The Influence of ABC Broadcasting — A Narrative of Evolution
What was the function of programming in the beginning?
Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) and National Broadcasting System (NBC) initially set the tone for news formatting for radio, invented around 1913. The American Broadcasting System (ABC) did not appear on the scene until NBC was forced to break up its NBC red stations and NBC blue stations because the FCC found the station to be a monopolistic, and so NBC blue became ABC.
Then television came along
Simultaneously, television technology positions NBC, CBS, and Dumont in a place to televise news and other programming to Americans who could afford television sets in the late thirties.
- While ABC came into the game late, they eventually began televising their own programs sometime in the early forties.
- NBC and CBS was grounded in providing world-class reporting of global events to viewers, and during the Depression and World War II, these stations captured the attention of viewers.
